The latest local and international news and trends in architecture and the built environment from leading architects discussing smart infrastructure, new projects, sustainability, and the evolution of the industry.

Architecture Projects

What is Architecture?

  • Architecture is defined as both, the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or other structures. It encompasses the entire process from ideation to production of buildings.
  • Architecture can also be defined as the macro-level activity of the architect (planning, design, landscape…etc.) or the micro-level activity (furniture, construction details, materials used…etc.).

What are the different types of architecture?

  • Vernacular architecture, prehistoric architecture, ancient architecture, Asian architecture, Islamic architecture, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Modern architecture which can consist of early modern, modernism, and postmodernism.

What methods are used in Architecture planning?

  • The ideation stage can begin with sketching and hand drawing, and lead to creating master plans using softwares like AutoCaad or other technological hardware and software.
  • Building Information Modelling (BIM): process supported by various tools, technologies and contracts involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places.

What role does Technology play in Architecture?

  • 3D technology: to create realistic models of an architectural project or to create 3D pieces for the building or structure built.
  • BIM: to bring your idea to life and showcase your designs to clients.
  • Architectural technology: a component of architecture and building engineering, which is the application of technology to the design of buildings.

Architecture and Sustainability

  • Sustainable architecture is architecture that reduces the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space and the ecosystem.

The RIBA design stages

  • The RIBA Plan of Work is the definitive model for the design and construction process of buildings. The RIBA Plan of Work organises the process of briefing, designing, constructing and operating building projects into eight stages and explains the stage outcomes, core tasks and information exchanges required at each stage. The stages include Stage 0: Strategic Definition | Stage 1: Preparation and Briefing | Stage 2: Concept Design | Stage 3: Spatial Coordination | Stage 4: Technical Design | Stage 5: Manufacturing and Construction| Stage 6: Handover | Stage 7: Use
